October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Protect yourself and your company by making cybersecurity a priority for everyone. Here are four tips that help keep your data and employees safe.
Choose passwords and security questions that can’t be guessed by reviewing personal or company social media pages. Follow best practices by making passwords at least eight characters long, including letters, numbers and Do not use the same password for banking access that you do for other types password-protected sites.
Be thoughtful when making social media posts. Don’t include information that can tip off thieves to your security systems. For example, never post when or how cash deliveries are made to and from the business. When displaying photos online, make sure security features are hidden.
Require employees to use a password to access mobile devices on which company information is read or stored. Make sure each has remote finding and locking capability so that if a mobile device is lost, company data can be quickly secured.
Teach team members how to identify fraudulent emails. Don’t click on links or attachments when you are not familiar with the sender. Remind employees that they should not provide credit card numbers, bank account numbers, or passwords simply because they receive a request. If a team member receives a request for non-public information, including employee social security numbers or company bank account numbers, the employee should not supply the information without verifying the validity of the request using previously known contact information.
